The study has shown that companies benefiting from the crisis have adapted to change and accept it more clearly than companies that are merely coping or feeling uncertain. Companies under existential threat are unable to conduct their business in the current situation or can only do so to a very limited extent and see no (short-term) possibilities for adapting their business model. The level of digitization also plays a significant role in how adaptable companies are, regardless of their industry (excluding services that can only be provided in personal contact).

In healthcare, no new business models emerged from the survey. The opportunities of e-health have not yet gained traction.

The key findings of the study can be summarized in the following theses:

  • Current support measures largely miss the actual needs and are perceived as overly complex and slow.
  • The entrepreneur/manager's mental attitude towards the crisis has a decisive influence on the company's survival.
  • It is possible to at least manage well in (almost) every industry.
  • No gender is more resilient to the crisis than the other.
  • Digitalization makes companies more flexible and adaptable.
  • Many companies are currently experiencing positive results with flexible work structures.
  • Many companies are in a waiting posture due to the uncertain situation and thus mentally restrict themselves in creative problem-solving.
  • Support measures are needed that lead affected companies out of their shock state and, precisely now, equip them in the shortest possible time with resources for future-proof investments in digitalization and innovative new business models.
  • Few companies seek external help through consulting. Those who do generally manage at least well with the crisis.
